The
Zuni Pueblo people have long been recognized, by both
Native American people and
others) as the best fetish (small
stone animal) carvers in the world. Fetish carvings are
part of a Zuni's life... part of their beliefs.
Among
Zuni fetish carvers, few are capable of making fetish
necklaces. The skills
required to make a beautiful, fetish
necklace goes far beyond the capability of
most carvers.
And
of those few, Andres Quandelacy is among the best.
His fetish necklaces are
complex and original and so
difficult to carve that they are free of imitation.

Zuni Mother of Pearl Mountain Lion Fetish Necklace
The fetish necklace
shown above contains 15
beautifully carved fetishes. Among them are Rams,
Moles, Deer, Bears, Buffalo, and Mountain
Lion. All fetishes are strung on a 26"
Double Strand of natural
Ox Blood Red Coral.
The fetishes are carved from gem Mother of Pearl,
Jet, Spiney Oyster, Turquoise, Malachite,
Fossil Ivory, and Fluorite.
Each carved fetish measures about 7/8" except
the center Lion which is 1 7/8".
