Lynn Quam
Lynn
Quam fetishes are an artful merger of Zuni traditional
carving and modern sculpture. Lynn's fetishes seem
Henry Moore like with their graceful, abstract,
smooth lines.
However, Lynn goes beyond Mr. Moore as his fetishes
share with us the traditions and spirit of the Zuni
Pueblo. Stone and shell come alive
in Lynn Quam's hands.

Sunface and Butterfly Designs
Under the Zuni Sunface in the top photo, there appears
in the stone a large Kokopelli (the humped back flute player).
The following Zuni Creation story was told to me years ago
by Herbert Him and I re-tell it
with Herbert's permission.
The Zuni
came from the forth world (a bowl), the Grand Canyon.
Kokopelli, the Creator, stood
atop the canyon playing his flute.
As he played, tadpoles started to rise. Up
the Grand Canyon
they climbed, higher and higher. As they climbed the
tadpoles
changed to frogs. Kokopelli continued to
play and the tadpoles, now frogs, climbed
even
higher eventually reaching the top.
At the top of the bowl, the Grand Canyon,
the frogs
became human and the Zuni began.
The Kokopelli (or hump back flute player) is a fertility symbol
... a seducer that appears as a human by day and becomes
a becomes a buffalo at night.
