Kokopelli is a sacred fertility figure

White Marble Kokopelli and Buffalo

The following is the Zuni Creation story.
It was told to me by Herbert and I re-tell it now with Herbert's permission.

The Zuni came from the forth world (a bowl), the Grand Canyon.  Kokopelli, the Creator, stood atop the canyon playing his flute.  As he played, tadpoles started to rise.  Up the Canyon they  climbed, higher and higher.  As they climbed the tadpoles changed to frogs.  Kokopelli continued to play and the tadpoles, now frogs, climbed higher still; eventually reaching the top.  At the top of the bowl, or Grand Canyon, the frogs became human and the Zuni began.

This sculpture, as it is with all Herbert's work, evolved from the stone.  He saw a vision and set it free.  As you look at the sculpture you'll see the story come to life.   The frog's face at the top of the bowl is starting to become human.

The Kokopelli (or hump back flute player) is a seducer.  By night  Kokopelli becomes a buffalo.
